1 in 3 students in the U.S. exit our school system without ever having a mentor. They never have an adult outside their family that shows up for them or invests in them. We’re on a mission to change that. We’re celebrating 25 years of increasing equitable access to mentors, matching children from historically underrepresented groups with their own champion who consistently fuels them with care, encouragement, and academic support. This is our story of bridging the opportunity gap with eMentors.

The STEM economy is here. STEM jobs are growing faster (42% faster) and pay better (29% better) than non-STEM US sectors. But women and minorities are terribly underrepresented in STEM fields. To close this gender and race gap and better position women and minorities to participate in the new STEM economy, we must act now. To learn more about the STEM opportunity, the gender and minority gap and why we must inspire and encourage girls and minorities to STEM while they are young, please check out the TryEngineering Together infographic. To best staff our STEM workforce and ensure our children can fully participate, we must mentor and inspire them in elementary school. “They’ve given up hope in learning,” Mrs. Jackson told us, describing the 10-year-olds in her Jacksonville, North Carolina class. Many of her students were second language learners, some were homeless, and all were economically disadvantaged. She was seeking a solution that would both educate and motivate her students to see beyond their current world and discover their potential. She lacked role models and adult volunteers willing to come help in her local community. Mrs. Jackson knew that doing this on her own was nearly an impossible task. Then she discovered eMentoring, offered on the CricketTogether platform, free to schools, which connected her with a classful of eMentors from a business located thousands of miles away. Through eMentoring, Mrs. Jackson was able to give every student their own adult eMentor.
